IV Sedation
At Mid-Atlantic Oral Surgery, we understand that many people may experience anxiety when thinking about visiting the dentist or when coming in for certain procedures. Since we don’t want fear or anxiety to prevent you from getting the dental care that you need, we are proud to offer IV sedation as a way to improve your experience in our office.
IV sedation, also known as ‘twilight’ or ‘sleep’ dentistry, can help you achieve relaxation and peace during treatment without putting you to sleep or disrupting any of your bodily processes. This sedation dentistry option allows for you to remain conscious and answer any questions your dentist may ask during treatment.
You can rest assured that IV sedation is a safe solution for dental anxiety. Your dentist will continually be monitoring your pulse and oxygen levels throughout your treatment, and will take blood pressure readings before and after sedation.
We recommend having a friend or family member accompany you to your appointment and drive you home afterward as you may feel a little groggy as the sedative wears off. It is also recommended to take the rest of the day off to rest before returning to work the next day.

Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom tooth extraction is an important procedure that has become a rite of passage for many teens and young adults due to a variety of reasons. The wisdom teeth, or third molars, are typically the last teeth to come in and there is often not enough room for them to grow properly. When there is not enough space for the wisdom teeth to develop, they may cause other oral health problems, become impacted (unable to break through the jawbone or gum tissue), or may grow at an incorrect angle.
Common dental problems associated with wisdom teeth include but are not limited to:
- Disturbing the natural tooth alignment
- Damage to surrounding teeth
- Tooth decay
- Infection and inflammation of gums
- Formation of cysts
- Damage to the jaw bone
Dentists may recommend wisdom teeth extraction to avoid these complications and to keep your smile healthy. We will carefully evaluate your smile including the position of your teeth to determine whether you would benefit from tooth extraction. We offer several options for sedation and anesthesia so that your wisdom teeth extraction is as painless and comfortable as possible.

Dental Implants
When you have missing teeth, an alternative solution to dentures is dental implants. While dentures are removable, dental implants provide permanent new teeth to restore your mouth’s function and appearance. Dental implants tend to offer a successful and lasting solution to the loss of some or all of your teeth.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting treatment for receding gums works best for patients who are suffering from more extensive gum loss where gum disease cannot be resolved by a professional cleaning alone. This procedure can help repair the damaged area of the gums and work to prevent further gum tissue loss. In addition to stopping recession, bone graft treatment will better protect the roots of the teeth from decay by giving the patient more gum line, and reduce tooth sensitivity to hot and cold foods.
During a bone graft procedure, the patient doesn’t feel a thing as we use a local anesthetic to keep them pain-free. After the operation, the patient may experience some soreness and slight discomfort, which can be effectively treated with a combination of rest, cold compresses, and, if needed, prescription medication. With proper care, the bone graft will protect the previously exposed root and serve as a healthier gum line, restoring your smile and confidence.
Extractions
An extraction is performed to remove a tooth, whether because of disease, crowding, or damage. When extractions are required, the area around the tooth will be numbed and your dentist will remove the tooth. A small amount of bleeding is normal, as your mouth will replace the removed tooth root by forming a blood clot in the area.
